How to write an argument
Knowing how to structure and write an argumentative essay is always useful. It allows you to present evidence in support of a thesis, but also to convince a reader of the validity of the position taken by the author. For the reader, reading an argumentative essay is an opportunity to get a more global view of a subject and to cover the different facets of a debate. Here are some tips on how to write an argument.
1) Do your research
Go to the library or the Internet and search for books and sources on your topic. Look for sources that take a comprehensive view of your topic and include arguments that support or refute your thesis.
2) Be orderly
To begin your argument, you must be clear about your objectives: announce them clearly and then argue to achieve them. As far as possible, your arguments should be supported by precise and indisputable facts, so that your interlocutor cannot question them. This helps especially with children or teenagers as public.
3) Remember the basics
When you write an argument, you must know how to express three elements:
The thesis: This is the idea I want to defend, the answer to the question asked.
The arguments: These are the reasons that support the thesis
Examples: These are the precise illustrations that give weight to the arguments.
4) Connect your ideas
When you write an argument, your ideas must be linked together by logical connectors, which can express different nuances:
– explain: because, since, because, that is…
– add an idea: and, then, furthermore, in addition…
– oppose ideas: however, on the other hand, but, nevertheless, however…
– organize ideas: first of all, finally…
– give an example: for example, thus, it is, as evidenced, as proves, as shows…
5) Try your ideas
Ask a peer (who may not share your point of view) to debate your topic. This will allow you to refine your thinking and develop new arguments.
Knowing how to write an argument also requires humility, which is also a personal quality. Never reject ideas that are against yours. Always be open to widen your views. Then you’ll have all the advantage.
