How to write a cover letter

The primary objective of the cover letter is to get a job interview. To do this, you need to write a structured and organized document, in order to make it punchy and convincing. Its presentation must also allow the recruiter to read your cover letter easily, by making it clear and understandable. The cover letter is the first thing recruiters look at, and they spend less than a minute on it. So you need to write a letter that is relevant, original and concise, and that makes them want to read your resume. Here are some tips on how to write a cover letter.

1) When you write a cover letter: make no mistakes

Obviously, when you write a cover letter the spelling must be perfect. Even if you use our sample cover letter, please proofread it and don’t hesitate to have someone else proofread it for you. Also use the automatic spell checker of your word processor. A spelling mistake can be a deterrent, especially if the job you want involves writing tasks.

2) Get to the point

Start by explaining why you are the ideal candidate for the job? And no false modesty. If there’s one place you need to sell yourself, it’s in a cover letter. Don’t just mention where you studied and worked. Draw the recruiter’s attention to specific qualities and talents. Your CV includes all the “neutral” information about your education and experience. There is no need to repeat it in your cover letter.

3) When you write a cover letter: do your own research

Don’t stay in your comfort zone and just write a cover letter. Gather as much information as possible about the company you are applying to: about the mission and vision, clients, competitors, recent projects, social media used, etc. Try to understand the needs of the organization to see how your skills can be useful there.

4) Be original

Keep in mind that the cover letter is not a determining factor for all types of positions. Think for example of jobs where the visual portfolio is particularly important, such as in video games or 3D animation. The objective of the letter is to convince the recruiter that you are the right candidate. If you have a great idea to attract attention without writing a letter, be creative and try it!

When trying to write a cover letter, make sure that the personnel managers read your cover letter with interest, sense your motivation and immediately find the knowledge and experience they are looking for. This will bring you one step closer to a job interview.
