How to write a haiku

The first rule of composition of a haiku is that it consists of 3 lines. The first one is 5 syllables, the second one is 7 and the third one is 5 again. So, 17 syllables, in all. No more, no less. This rule must be scrupulously respected. But within those limits, you can find absolute freedom. Here are some tips on how to write a haiku.

1)     When you write a haiku: give some clues

The idea here is either to name a season itself or to have the reader guess it by using clues. If we talk to you about rainbows and birds, you will know which season we are talking about.  The words can be from the lexical field of nature or from the human world such as holidays or daily life. It is really a matter of looking around you because it is the place where you are when you write your haiku that counts.

2)     Listen to the haiku

At the base of all authentic haiku is an experience: that of agreement and connivance with the course of things. One does not decide to compose a haiku. It is the haiku, more precisely, the experience at the heart of the haiku, that spontaneously presents itself. It is then simply a matter of finding the words that best describe this experience, that embrace the reality of things, and this in a great clarity of expression, which is essential for the reader to be able to share this experience from the start.

3)     When you write a haiku: find a kireji

Known in English as the cutting word, the kireji creates a pause or break in the rhythm of the poem. The kireji is often deployed to juxtapose two images. Contemporary haiku may not always use a kireji, but juxtaposition remains a common feature of haiku.

4)     Read it aloud

The last step in writing your haiku is to read it aloud. This will allow you to count your syllables, but also to check that the sequence of words and the three lines is natural. You will then be able to replace the words that do not fit.

When you write a haiku, you almost play a game. To be as meaningful as possible in a few words. You have to concentrate your attention on a single image and remove everything that is useless.
