Overcome your writer’s block

The best advice for writing will always be “write and keep writing!”. But there are very difficult cases in which overcoming writer’s block requires more than an iron will. Here are some tips that, hopefully, will reconcile you with your creative side.

1) Overcome your writer’s block: remix your ideas

Maybe you have a very fixed order in your head of how ideas should go: first idea A, then B, C, and so on. And if you haven’t started with idea A, then the whole alphabet must wait. But what if you start with the letter C, H, even Z? This will give you a better perspective and your ideas will start to flow.

2) Gossip always helps

Reach out to a loved one and try to talk to them about your ideas. It’s not written in stone that you must overcome writer’s block alone. A good talk, with someone asking you for details and new ideas, will boost your writing.

3. Seek feedback from peers

The old reliable: a writing workshop is almost guaranteed to get you writing again. Maybe you prefer a workshop among people at your own level, where hierarchy won’t play a role in rebuffs or put-downs. Or maybe you’d like a workshop led by some authority who, like a guru, will guide you to unsuspected places. Whatever works for you.

4. Overcome your writer’s block: find your ritual

Many successful writers have shared their little rituals prior to writing. To overcome writer’s block, we recommend finding your own ritual. Many people prefer to start very early in the morning, when there are fewer distractions and when coffee tastes much better. Other people work best in the evenings, like nocturnal animals who find inspiration in the moon, the stars, the darkness. Try what time of day, what charms help you and even what sounds make you write best.

5. Celebrate your accomplishments

It’s always satisfying when you make a breakthrough, no matter how small: a page, a paragraph, an idea clarified. Celebrate this small step for you, but a big step for literature. Keep writing!

With these tips, which we at WrittenSpells always take into account, you’ll be able to overcome writer’s block. When you finish your project, we’ll love to read it. Let’s get to work!
