What is keyword density

Mention a keyword or phrase too many times and the search engines will probably frown on your site. Do a little less than necessary and the search engines can’t pick up enough signals to rank the page for that keyword. In other words, you need to get it right for the best search performance. Not too much, not too little. Here are some pointers on what keyword density is and how to use it in your SEO strategy.

Two types

The density of a keyword is the number of times this keyword appears in a page. This is called raw density. On the other hand, the weighted density adds a factor of location of this keyword in the page in addition to its frequency of repetition. In SEO, the location of the keyword is important. The keyword placed in certain tags of the page, and therefore the HTML code, will have more value in the eyes of Google.

Kewyord density: tools and plug-ins

The keyword density index corresponds to the number of occurrences of the keyword (number of repetitions of the word) compared to the total number of words on the page.

Keyword density index (ID) = number of occurrences of the word / total number of words in the page.

For example: a keyword repeated 5 times in a page of 500 words will have an ID of 1%. If you want to rely on tools and plug-ins, some sites offer tools to calculate the density index of a word: SEO Tools, Keyword Density Analyser, Ranks are a few of them.

Is there an ideal ratio?

When you calculate it, you want to know if it’s a good ratio for the page. The truth, however, is that there is no optimal KD for every page. If you want to achieve your ideal keyword density, you’ll need to do some trial and error. In general, you’ll want to stay below 3%.

When determining an ideal keyword density for your webpage, remember: it is important to write a qualitative content that arouses the interest of Internet users if you want to obtain a good positioning in the SERPs. This requires the choice of the right keywords and a good structuring of the texts. The title and meta description tags must also be optimized according to the targeted query.
