What is click depth

The click depth of a page is the number of clicks required to access a page from the home page of your website. The homepage of your website has a click depth of 0. Pages which we access to by clicking on a link on the home page have a click depth of 1. Pages that come from pages that have a click depth of 1 have a click depth of 2, etc. Here are some pointers on what click depth is and how to consider it in your SEO strategy.

Depth matters to ranking

Deep pages have a lower PageRank and are less likely to be in consideration of search engine spiders like Google. This means that bots are less likely to discover them. And if they have discovered them, they are less likely to come back and crawl them to see if they are still there and if they have changed. Of course, being crawled does not mean that these pages will be ranked in search engines, but it is a prerequisite.

Rely on breadcrumbs

Another important element to reduce the number of clicks in web referencing and navigation is the use of the Breadcrumb trail. It allows the user to easily identify where they are in the depth of navigation on the site. The deep page is necessarily in a category page, which can also be in a section page. The breadcrumb trail makes it possible to go back up in the navigation without having to make a large number of clicks.

If you host a large site with many deep pages, manually reorganizing your internal structure could be a nightmare. If you don’t want to start from scratch, you can decrease the depth of your page with internal links. This has the advantage of decreasing the number of clicks you need to reach a page on your site and make the web robot’s job easier.
