How to write a hypothesis

The hypothesis is a proposed answer to the problem. It is a supposition that we will try to defend throughout the essay. In this respect, whether or not it is right or wrong will depend on the relevance of the elements provided to answer the question. A problem may give rise to several hypotheses, all of which must be tested throughout the work. Here are some tips on how to write a hypothesis.

1)     When you write a hypothesis: do your research first

Hypotheses are statements in which you give an immediate answer to an underlying question. Because you do not yet know the answer, you will first need to conduct preliminary research. This preliminary research takes place through a literature search, which you use in your introduction and in delineating your problem.

2)     Ask yourself several questions

All research must first start with a problem, that is, what we want to know about a phenomenon. In fact, it is a question about your subject: “Why did such and such a fact occur?” “How can you explain this situation?” So, you pose the problem in the form of questions about your subject. It is not a matter of describing an object of study, but of analyzing the subject based on a question. Then, classify these questions in the order in which you think they should be addressed.

3)     When you write a hypothesis: be general

To be credible, the hypothesis must be based on real facts. It must also be testable using qualitative or quantitative data. Gathering information helps to develop the main problem. In this phase, you will need to identify important points from his or her observations. This will be in the form of one or more declarative sentences. From this, it will be possible to think of a general hypothesis.

4)     Be scientific

You make hypotheses to test your expectations: you check whether they are correct or incorrect. You can test them through statistical research or literature searches. Several research methods can be used.

Once you have written your hypothesis, the next step is to design the experiment. This allows you to statistically analyze the data and test your hypothesis. Now get to work.
