How to avoid spam

A campaign to acquire inbound links can work in different ways more or less effectively. In some cases, it can happen that the link builder does a real dirty work. This results in the creation of very poor-quality links and which are easily sanctioned by Google. Here are some pointers on how to avoid spam in your SEO campaign.

Filter spam from Google Analytics

When making technical changes, you always want to have a backup to refer to in case of problems. The same is true for Google Analytics. You’ll want to keep an unfiltered view. So you have data to compare with the filtered results to make sure they work. This also gives you a view to go back to if any of your filters aren’t working quite right.

How to do it

Check the “Exclude all calls from known bots” box that you can find in Administration > View > View Settings. It’s easy to do and it already rids your account of all bots referenced in the list produced by the Interactive Advertising Bureau. Of course, this list is not exhaustive and bots that have not yet been listed by the IAB can continue affecting you.

Enable comment moderation

If you decide to enable comment moderation, no comments will appear on your site until they have been reviewed and approved. This means that you will spend more time monitoring your comments, but it can have a really beneficial effect on the quality of your site. This is especially beneficial if you regularly write about controversial topics that are likely to cause arguments. This setting is usually available in blog development software.

Set up a quality net linking

Instead of waiting for ages for Google to clean up for you and throw the bad inbound links out of its index, you can take the lead and set up very good quality backlinks to counterbalance the effects of bad links. The disadvantage of this method is that the creation of quality links takes a great amount of time and not everyone can afford to invest time and money in building a high-end net linking.

Remember: there are many methods to avoid spam. Don’t expect to solve the problem immediately, all of these options will require time and investment on your part.
