How to write a sports article

Creating a sports article is a special exercise. To do so, it is essential to follow some basic journalistic rules in order to write a good text. Your article must light the desire to attract the attention of readers. Here are some tips on how to write a sports article.

1)     When you write a sports article: verify your sources

This is without a doubt the most important thing. Whether you are a web editor, a journalist for a media or a freelancer who has to prove themselves, never forget to check your sources. Don’t mind having to justify false information given too quickly! You will lose credibility. This advice obviously applies to all categories of articles. Especially since they are often shared on social networks, the best strategy is to write them with precision.

2)     Remember the pyramid

Once you have decided what is the most interesting aspect of the information you want to cover, it should appear in the first paragraph. This technique is the inverted pyramid. It consists of placing the most relevant information at the beginning of the article and the least relevant at the end.

3)     When you write a sports article: be anecdotic

Whether you are talking about a team, a trophy, a player’s career or his last victory, it is essential to attract the attention of your reader by offering him some interesting anecdotes. They will give an even more accurate picture of your subject.

4)     Know your slang

The vocabulary you use must adapt to the sports field, i.e. all words referring to sports rules (which are sometimes not common terms) must appear in the body of your article. The present tense is rather common in sports articles. It gives life and rhythm to the story and allows the immediacy of the action to be conveyed.

When you write a sports article and you are having a hard time meeting your deadline, do this: Try to remember why you wanted to write about sports in the first place. Think about what you love about them and let it reflect in your writing.
